On 22 June 2023, I participated in a plenary session on the “Impact of Disruptive Technologies on Public Service Delivery” during an event organised by the Ministry of Public Service, Administrative and Institutional Reforms on the UN Public Service Day 2023.
During the one hour long session, we spoke about how emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain can be useful tools to enhance public sector delivery. We also spoke about some negative aspects such as, first and foremost, the lack of suitably trained people in the country.
At the end, we engaged in a lively discussion with the audience, most notably on the use of the word “disruptive” instead of “emerging”. For me, technology is neutral: it is neither good, nor bad. Hence, I would have preferred to use the more neutral “emerging”. But what’s in a word?
The other panelists were Marc Israel, Vrigesh Futta, Patil Hunma and Maleika Heenaye-Mamode Khan. The panel was moderated by Suraj Ramgolam.
